…Body Fuel…

It’s been just about 4 months now since I last did the 21 Day Fix program. (You can click HERE to see my results from that Round 1) In addition to losing pounds and inches, I saw a noticeable difference in the way my clothes fit and how I felt about my body. Perhaps most importantly for my health, towards the end of the 21 Day Fix, I stopped craving my night-time snacks.  I don’t know about you but the only “alone time” I get is after the kids go to bed late at night and is my time to relax, watch Netflix, craft, and SNACK! Hurricane Popcorn, ice cream with fresh sliced bananas and chopped almonds, Hagen Daz ice cream bars, sugar cereals, chips and dip…I could go on and on. Well, towards the end of my 1st round of the 21 Day Fix, those night time cravings (for sweet, salty and crunchy snacks) seriously diminished.  With the guidance of this program, I was able to focus instead on what fuel my body “needed” – mind over matter! – and FELT great in the process! (not starved…)

Since I first completed the 21 Day Fix program (that runs for 21 days), I’ve just been enjoying being a busy mama of three (4 and under) – and truth be told, have once again indulged in one too many ice cream cones and Starbucks frappuccino’s! (<—my weakness)  Well, it’s a NEW month and I’ve decided to once again focus on my nutrition (in addition to my fitness) and begin Round 2 of the 21 Day Fix!

On this program, you’ll drink Shakeology every day in addition to a wide range of clean foods. The detailed eating guide will walk you through how to figure out how many color coded containers to eat (i.e. 4 red, 3 green, 2 purple, etc) and from there, you’re given freedom with creating your own tasty meals.  However, I fully understand that sometimes, when you’re given too much leeway in creating your own meal plans, it can get quite overwhelming, SO in my Challenge Groups, I offer sample weekly meal plans in addition to posting some of the meals that I eat.  As an example, this is my favorite go-to 21 Day Fix breakfast: plain greek yogurt, fresh cut strawberries, and frozen organic blueberries. A Challenge Group is a private Facebook group where people come together with a “like” goal (complete the 21 Day Fix together) and can turn to for support, motivation, accountability, inspiration, recipes, share photos, and just CONNECT with one another. I will be posting daily (and including many of my own personal meals) and find that when people have a group like this to turn to, not only do they successfully complete the program, but they encourage others to perhaps stay more true to and involved in the program than they would’ve otherwise had the self-control to do so alone.

Brazil Butt Lift?!

Nope, not talking about getting some sort of plastic surgery. 😛  I’m talking about a WORKOUT!  This was one of the very 1st workouts I purchased (via a Challenge Pack).  It included everything shown below – workout DVD’s, eating/meal guide, workout calendar, body measuring tape, and a month of Shakeology.

Today, I successfully completed my very 1st post baby workout!  I was told by my midwife, that as long as I physically felt up to it, I had her go-ahead to start exercising from 2 weeks postpartum.  (as long as I wasn’t powerlifting…she was serious about this…I delivered at a Military hospital and she said she had some serious fitness enthusiasts who push themselves too hard and start INTENSELY working out from 1-2 weeks after baby! WHOA…)  Anyways, today, I am 2.5 weeks out from having Monroe (17 days to be exact). I’ve been feeling great so I decided to begin with a fairly low impact form of exercise.  Currently, we have Focus T25, P90X3, Hip Hop Abs, TurboFire, and Brazil Butt Lift workouts.  Yes, you could say I’ve been stockpiling workouts while I was pregnant. 🙂  Out of all of those, I figured the Brazil Butt Lift workout would be the most low-impact – giving my body a little more leeway (compared to the others).  Plus, I honestly didn’t feel ready to be jumping all over the place, and sweating bullets.

Well, yes to “no jumping all over the place” but forget the “no sweating bullets” part!  I did the 20 minute Basics workout which breaks down each move for you – prepping you for your workouts to come, followed by a 35 minute Boom Boom workout (apparently what they call the booty in Brazil) and man was I dripping by the time I was done with these 2!  My thighs felt the burn, my core was kept engaged throughout, my glutes…..I can feel them starting the get “lifted” (lol….just kidding, not YET, but I definitely felt a burn there too!). I was challenged in every sense of the word throughout this entire workout. There wasn’t a whole lot of jumping (just one section of burpees for 30-45 secs or so) so this was a low impact workout in my book – but what it lacked in impact intensity, it made up for in targeted muscle engagement.

Here’s some pics that my amazing husband took….one-handed while holding baby…in our new, 1/2 complete, home gym (A.K.A. garage… 😉 ) Maya even got in on the action copying mama!  Good habits start young and we fully intend on setting a healthy example for our children:

Those pics may not “seem” like a big deal, but:
1) this was my very 1st post Monroe workout
2) by the time I was done, I was sweating bullets and my legs felt like jelly
3) this is the 1st step towards getting a ‘Brazil Butt’!
4) I’m not showing all the other pics because they were blurry and I looked too awkward! lol…

I’ll be the first to admit that it takes me awhile to catch on to moves and I’m still working on my coordination, but I had so much fun with this workout!  If you’re thinking of setting up some sort of workout studio – I HIGHLY recommend trying to set up a mirror so you can watch yourself workout – I truly feel it helps with your form so you can try to correct yourself to look more like the people in the video. You don’t need a huge one like the one my husband just set up in our garage – a small one will do just fine! I know Walmart has full length mirrors starting at $7-10 – one of those would be great!

Anyways, great thing about being able to workout in the comfort of our own home now: I don’t have to waste time driving to a gym – paying for a gym membership – and finding childcare (since we have THREE kids now!), I don’t have to look awkward doing difficult coordination moves in front of anyone other than myself (in my reflection), and MOST importantly… I get to hold my baby girl in my arms again the minute I’m done… 🙂

Shake-a-what?

So many times, I’ve been asked “What is Shakeology?” I finally figured, why not put as much detail into a post as possible so everyone can be better informed and fully understand my love for this product? Below is my  list of pros and cons of Shakeology 🙂

PROS:
1. Nutrition – has 23 Vitamins and Minerals, ensuring you’re getting your daily supply in!
2. Convenience – who has time to find/put together 70+ quality ingredients from all over the world into one simple shake? If you do, then great…if not – reach for a Shakeology shake!  How easy is it to scoop your shake powder into a shaker cup on your way out the door? Seconds….and you have a nutritionally dense meal in your hands.
3. Quality Ingredients – mostly non-GMO and organic ingredients! Also 2 vegan options for those who don’t want lactose, soy or dairy in their diets. NO artificial ingredients including NO artificial sweeteners (i.e. sucralose) as found in most other shakes on the market.
4. Digestion – has prebiotics, probiotics and digestive enzymes which aid in improving digestion, regularity, and nutrition absorption (GREAT for pregnancy digestion!)
5. Immune System – Adaptogens , antioxidants and phytonutrients (plant-sourced ingredients) help to promote strong immune systems. Since starting Shakeology 3.5 months ago, I haven’t been sick one single time!
6. Helps to reduce food cravings – I can personally vouch for this one – I used to be an ALL day and ALL night snacker. Since starting Shakeology, my snacking cravings have all virtually disappeared….seriously.  I’m therefore able to focus on adding quality meals to my diet vs. empty calories via snacks all day long – resulting in very healthy weight gain during this 3rd pregnancy.

I could go on and on about all the great things I LOVE about Shakeology but lets get to some cons as I’m sure some of you are thinking about some of those too:

CONS:
1. PRICE – yes, a month’s worth of Shakeology may lead to an initial sticker shock. At $130 for a 30-serving supply, it’s definitely not the “cheapest” thing on the market. HOWEVER, you get what you pay for, and, at roughly $4/shake (meal) this is so do-able! Compare this $4 dose of dense nutrition to a calorie filled Starbucks Frapp, or a fast food meal, or a bag of chips on the run….what will come out ahead in terms of health/nutrition value AND price? Sometimes those Starbucks drinks are $5+!?!  Yes there’s an initial investment involved, BUT if you’re committed to putting quality ingredients into you body, you will find a way! (and your body will thank you for it)  We are on a budget, but every month, we specifically set aside money to purchase enough enough Shakeology for us both. Our health and nutrition is something we will not sacrifice! We always make it work with our budget 🙂
2. The scary MLM appearance – Yes, Beachbody is, by definition, a MLM (multi-level-marketing) company. However, this company rely’s on primarily word-of-mouth marketing to get their products out there, recognized, and sampled. Who would want to sell something that they didn’t 150% believe in and live by? Beachbody encourages to “Be proof the product works.” In personally using Shakeology, I can vouch from 1st hand experience that it works – it works in boosting my immune system, energy level, reduce cravings, and make me feel all around GREAT and HEALTHY. Through my personal experience, I’m therefore more than willing to share my experience and thoughts on it through word-of-mouth.

Sometimes, as much as someone can “talk” about a product, it’s best to “watch” a short video about it. Heard of Tony Horton before? (founder of P90X, P90X2, P90X3, etc) – here’s his take on Shakeology 🙂

A New Year…

Every year, I kick off the year with a new bucket list of sorts. In the past, it’s included buying a house, adding a new member to our family, bringing in “X” amount of income, paying cash for the 1st time for a car… We always try to add “stretch” goals for us – but goals nonetheless that are still achievable.

Well, as we welcome 2014, I’d like to list a few of my 2014 goals here – you know – for accountability!…. :
1.  Get in the BEST SHAPE OF MY LIFE!
2. Focus on living a more healthy, organic, non-GMO lifestyle
3.  Successfully start Homeschooling my 3.5 year old (and his tag along 2 year old sister)
4. Make it a point to go on at least one FABULOUS all day field trip outing with the kiddos per month
5.  Become a master gardener
6.  Participate in more craft fairs – promoting my hand sewn embellished fabric hats and painstakingly assembled fabric wreaths 🙂
7.  Become a DIAMOND coach with Team Beachbody!
8. Earn enough through my part-time (at home) jobs to significantly contribute to our mortgage (we’re talking be able to contribute 20-25% towards our mortgage….a big, SCARY amount! remember….we live in Hawaii where housing prices are Out.Of.Control.)

There, I’ve put those out for the world to see.  T minus 11.5 more months – so time’s a tickin!  First off though: welcome baby “M” into this world (I’m 37w3d today…eeek!), so I can get a start on goal #1 on my list – “Get in the BEST SHAPE OF MY LIFE!”
