…Body Fuel…

It’s been just about 4 months now since I last did the 21 Day Fix program. (You can click HERE to see my results from that Round 1) In addition to losing pounds and inches, I saw a noticeable difference in the way my clothes fit and how I felt about my body. Perhaps most importantly for my health, towards the end of the 21 Day Fix, I stopped craving my night-time snacks.  I don’t know about you but the only “alone time” I get is after the kids go to bed late at night and is my time to relax, watch Netflix, craft, and SNACK! Hurricane Popcorn, ice cream with fresh sliced bananas and chopped almonds, Hagen Daz ice cream bars, sugar cereals, chips and dip…I could go on and on. Well, towards the end of my 1st round of the 21 Day Fix, those night time cravings (for sweet, salty and crunchy snacks) seriously diminished.  With the guidance of this program, I was able to focus instead on what fuel my body “needed” – mind over matter! – and FELT great in the process! (not starved…)

Since I first completed the 21 Day Fix program (that runs for 21 days), I’ve just been enjoying being a busy mama of three (4 and under) – and truth be told, have once again indulged in one too many ice cream cones and Starbucks frappuccino’s! (<—my weakness)  Well, it’s a NEW month and I’ve decided to once again focus on my nutrition (in addition to my fitness) and begin Round 2 of the 21 Day Fix!

On this program, you’ll drink Shakeology every day in addition to a wide range of clean foods. The detailed eating guide will walk you through how to figure out how many color coded containers to eat (i.e. 4 red, 3 green, 2 purple, etc) and from there, you’re given freedom with creating your own tasty meals.  However, I fully understand that sometimes, when you’re given too much leeway in creating your own meal plans, it can get quite overwhelming, SO in my Challenge Groups, I offer sample weekly meal plans in addition to posting some of the meals that I eat.  As an example, this is my favorite go-to 21 Day Fix breakfast: plain greek yogurt, fresh cut strawberries, and frozen organic blueberries. A Challenge Group is a private Facebook group where people come together with a “like” goal (complete the 21 Day Fix together) and can turn to for support, motivation, accountability, inspiration, recipes, share photos, and just CONNECT with one another. I will be posting daily (and including many of my own personal meals) and find that when people have a group like this to turn to, not only do they successfully complete the program, but they encourage others to perhaps stay more true to and involved in the program than they would’ve otherwise had the self-control to do so alone.

“3-Day Refresh” RESULTS!

Lately, I’ve been really wanting to do a detox or cleanse.  I try to eat fairly “clean” but fully realize that every once in awhile, it would be beneficial for a cleanse. Well, basically for the past 5+ years, I’ve been either pregnant or nursing (the latter category of which I presently fall into) so a detox is out of the question. So, what’s there to do when a new program comes out that I want to investigate?? Have Marv do the cleanse for me!

For starters, What is the 3-Day Refresh? But enough of the specifics….What was the Refresh like??  Here are some pics of what Marv had to eat on each Day – Day’s 1, 2 and 3:

Each day basically remained the same with just the 2 fruit options, 2 veggie options, and the dinner option changing.  What’s great about this cleanse is that there’s a huge list of approved fruits and veggies to choose from so if you like variety (or are picky about the fruits and veggies that you eat), there are a LOT of different things to choose from.  I spent less than $20 (keeping in mind I bought more than necessary for just Marv’s cleanse since we’re a family of FIVE…and the kids love their fruits…) but for under $20 I bought – carrots, cucumber, pear, banana, peach, apple, plum, and asparagus. The avocado (Healthy Fats choices) I already happened to have on hand from my parents’ neighbor’s tree so I figured I could easily use those (FREE!) vs budget for any of the other Healthy Fats options (almond butter, hummus, etc). Key here was prepping all his foods the night before so he could easily grab it and have it pre-portioned out and set to go.

Here were Marv’s take aways/thoughts for this Refresh: He normally drinks a Shakeology every morning so drinking one each morning of the Refresh was great to maintain his routine.  Initially, he was a bit concerned with the (small) portions of this cleanse (although he was pleasantly surprised with the total amount of food he was “allowed” each day since he was initially thinking cleanse = no food…).  His concern with the small portions was that he would be grumpy by days 2 and 3.  Turns out he didn’t turn into a grouch during the Refresh. (YAY!)  The Fiber Sweep drink wasn’t as bad as he though it would be.  Anything with the word “fiber” in it really, has that old person thought connection to it.  He got it down each day just fine – not having to struggle to get it down like he initially thought he would have to.  According to Marv, the Vanilla Fresh shakes were outright YUMMY! I didn’t try them but I did smell them and boy did they smell delicious!  They looked smooth and creamy and mixed up great in the plain old shaker cup (vs blender).  The 2 dinner meals that we tried were the Moroccan Carrot Salad and Roasted Asparagus with slivered almonds.  The Asparagus was a huge, tasty hit, but the Carrot Salad on the other hand was a big flop.  I think it was due to all the spices added (cumin, paprika, garlic, cinnamon, salt, olive oil, lemon juice, etc) – hey, I followed the recipe to a T!  It all comes down to personal preference though, and that Moroccan Carrot salad was NOT one of Marv’s favorites….  Marv drank the optional herbal teas about 1/2 the time and actually drank this tea in place of his daily coffee.  Although it doesn’t “replace” a good ole cup of coffee, it did fill that warm drink void for those 3 days (Marv is certainly looking forward to his morning coffee tomorrow though!)

Ok, ok, RESULTS….right??  Are you ready for this?  Without going into specifics with his actual weight and measurements…..I will let you know that in these past 3 days alone, Marv lost 5.2lbs and an inch off his waist!  (in 3 days…..) Here are his before/after pics (before on left, after on right). There are only very slight changes, but I can visibly see a minor “puffiness” change in him.  His body now looks more lean and toned vs puffy muscle toned.

Marv’s overall conclusion. This. Refresh. Works.  He said Day 1 was tough. He realized just how much he consumed in a typical day and it made him appreciated food SO much more – and understand just how true it is that food is FUEL for our bodies.  Towards the end, he said his tastebuds felt different (no processed foods and only minimal sea salt for seasoning) and he was no longer as hungry as Day 1 – his body was adjusting and knowing just what it needed to sustain itself.  He said although he wasn’t necessarily looking to cut weight, his body felt so much cleaner and lighter (5.2lbs lighter….). He felt FRESH. <—is that why it’s called the 3-Day ReFRESH? lol 😉

Today started off like any other day. Got the kids ready, headed out to our Thursday church Connect Group (got kids settled in for their church playtime), had a great time, headed home,  tucked everyone in for their naps, hopped on the computer w/ my free moment, and BAM.  I see that PiYO (Beachbody’s newest fitness program) was JUST released….ahead of schedule! Right now, Beachbody’s annual convention is going on in Vegas. Who needs to buy Almond Milk…..

…..when you can make your own anytime you want it!

Now, in this family, we go through almond milk FAST – mainly in our daily Shakeology shakes and with cereal.  (YUM!)  We used to get our almond milk in a 2 pack from Costco for just over $8 (or $4 for each carton).  WELL, a couple months back, we invested in a Vitamix, AND, in the recipe book that came with it, there was a recipe for almond milk! Turns out, it’s as simple as simple comes to make it.  SO, thus began my almond milk making endeavor.  Seriously, it’s SO simple….

First, pick up some almonds.  I like to buy in bulk and get the 3lb bags from Costco for $16.

Then, I soak them in water for anywhere from 30mins to overnight.  Soaking isn’t necessary since the Vitamix pulverizes everything so easily, but I like to “rinse” or “clean” them just a bit. (I think it yields a smoother, cleaner tasting milk)  Once soaked, discard water.

Place in blender.  The Vitamix recipe book almond milk recipe calls for 1 cup of almonds to 3 cups of water.  After making it this way a few times, I realized I like my milk thinned out just a tad more, so I up the water amount to closer to 3.5 cups per cup of almonds.  Even by “thinning” the milk out with the extra water, this recipe produces almond milk that’s stronger, and more almond-tasting than our previous store bought milk!  If using a vitamin, blend on Variable slowly increasing to level 10, then on High for 40-60 secs or until everything looks adequately blended.

Here’s what it’ll look like all blended up:

Next, strain the almond milk through a nut milk bag or yogurt strainer.  I use a nut milk bag (purchased on Amazon).  It looks like a super fine mesh or cheesecloth drawstring bag.  Now, some recipes say to just pour the milk into the bag and let it naturally drain through.  Well, I’m just too darn impatient to sit around waiting all day for it to drain on its own! So I let the bulk of the milk drain through for a couple minutes, then – while holding the top of the bag shut – gently twist and squeeze the rest of the milk out.  All that’ll remain is the almond pulp in the bag. (discard pulp and thoroughly wash nut milk bag for next use)

This whole process is truly SUPER simple! I’m just trying to outline every step….it really takes just a matter of minutes start to finish.  And, you’re left with fresh, amazingly tasty, homemade almond milk! I store my milk in a sterilite secure top closure pouring jug in the fridge …each batch usually only lasts 2-3 days 🙂  Maya approves of it too!!

P.S. Cost-wise, I’ve figured out that store bought almond milk runs about $0.50/cup.  My home-made milk runs closer to $0.78/cup.  Yikes! BUT…..I’m LOVING the fact that there are NO extra ingredients in this.  It’s amazingly smooth tasting, has an intense almond flavor, and is FRESH.  No preservatives to hold its shelf life (as found in store bought almond milks), and I can make it whenever I want 🙂  I can also play around with the flavor profile – increasing or decreasing the water I add to it (store bought almond milk definitely tastes more watered down compared to “my” version, lol), and I plan on trying a vanilla version soon using pure vanilla extract.  Hey, if Maya loves it, I must be doing something right, right?

* I fully intend on doing an organic version in the future….but those organic almonds are just SO pricey! (like 2x’s the cost….)

Overall review….Both Marv and I (and apparently Maya too now) are loving our homemade almond milk!  I’ve had many cooking/baking/experiementing flops lately. Thankfully, this was not one of them! 😉

 

7 days out!

Well, my 1st week as a mommy of THREE has officially come to a close. And I must say, having Marv back from his deployment has been a HUGE help! Not only am I loving having HIM back and enjoying his company and companionship, but he’s also able to take care of the two “big” kids while I can focus on little Monroe.

So, since I’m no longer pregnant, I decided to do another video  – “Post Baby Fitness – Part 2” – going a tiny bit more in depth with things I did during pregnancy to keep me active, and how I’m doing now at 7 days post partum:

 

Basically, here’s what I’ve done during this pregnancy:
– KEPT busy! Got involved more with crafting (did a craft fair), sold some of those crafts on Etsy (hats and jewelry),  started sewing, made kids Halloween costumes, playdates, playgrounds, etc.
– Joined Beachbody and started Shakeology while 6 months pregnant
– Tried to stay active walking – going on daily walks with the kids around the neighborhood and also intentionally parking farther while out doing errands
– LOW impact exercise (mainly watching and preparing myself mentally for when I’d be able to physically do those exercises in the months to come)
– my daily Shakeology seriously cut down on any junk food and sweets cravings I had and all I wanted to eat were “clean” things like fruits, veggies, and whole, healthy foods. I was therefore eating much healthier this pregnancy than I was during my other 2, allowing me to gain HEALTHY pounds with great quality nutrients instead of just “weight”.
– AND – I should also throw in there – taking care of 2 kids who love their mama…and love for me to pick them up….constantly, lol. My arms got some serious workouts holding my 23lb 2 year old, and my 33 lb 3.5 year old. Who needs to lift weights when you have kids, right?

7 days out, I physically feel fantastic and just about 99% of my “normal” self.  I credit this in LARGE part to my daily Shakeology shakes in addition to staying active, getting outside and MOVING! 🙂  Ready for the scary part?! Well….for me anyways. Since I’m trying to be real here, and prove how confident I am with crediting Shakeology to helping me physically bounce back after having my 3rd baby…….here’s some photo proof!

Here’s me the day before I gave birth (yes…I helped my husband hang our new garage “gym” mirror…that thing is HUGE!):

Anyways, every ‘body’ is different, every pregnancy is different, but this was my experience during this 3rd pregnancy and what I did that kept me healthy and active during it that I feel really contributed to my overall wellness now, 1 week after having Monroe.

Strawberry Shakeology Review

The brand spankin new flavor of Shakeology – Strawberry – was released just last monday (1/13) and, after much anticipation, my order came in and I was finally able to try it today!

I usually drink my shakes with just soy milk and ice (shaken up in a Shakeology Shaker Cup), but mixed this one up with:

–  5 ice cubes
– 15 oz ice cold water (1 serving calls for 8-12 oz liquid, but we prefer our shakes with a little more liquid and not as thick)
– 1 serving Strawberry Shakeology (whether you have a bag and you use one scoop, or use a packet like I did as shown above)
Shake, shake, shake everything up in the shaker cup and…..

…it was creamy and delicious! (this was just with water and ice mind you) I can just imagine how yummy it’ll taste with my organic soy milk 🙂  What I will add is that it’s not quite as “smooth” as the chocolate flavor. Whereas Chocolate would be 99% a smooth consistency (in my opinion), Strawberry was about 95% smooth. There seemed to be a tiny bit of ground strawberry seeds(?). Not a big enough deal to get stuck in my teeth or anything though. TOTALLY ok with all of us….my husband and I thought it made it feel more natural and authentic. Remember…Shakeology has NO artificial ingredients in it. Strictly ORGANIC.

Overall review from myself, husband, and 2 year old daughter = YUM!  I strongly believe Strawberry would be an excellent flavor pick for the Shakeology 3-Day Cleanse (since your shakes during the cleanse can only be mixed with water….and the strawberry flavor with water is still YUMMY!)

Post Baby Fitness – Part 1

Hold on, YES, I’m still pregnant!

But I decided to start a video diary/blog diary of my journey to getting fit once baby gets here – STARTING with now! On this journey, I’m sure I’ll chronicle daily struggles  – time management with THREE kids, energy, physical endurance, emotional struggles? etc. My goal in all this is to keep myself accountable with my ultimate end goal – as seen in my post here of getting into the BEST shape of my life in 2014!

So, anyways…..here’s to the beginning of this journey. Follow along with me!

So many times, I’ve been asked “What is Shakeology?” I finally figured, why not put as much detail into a post as possible so everyone can be better informed and fully understand my love for this product? Below is my  list of pros and cons of Shakeology 🙂

PROS:
1. Nutrition – has 23 Vitamins and Minerals, ensuring you’re getting your daily supply in!
2. Convenience – who has time to find/put together 70+ quality ingredients from all over the world into one simple shake? If you do, then great…if not – reach for a Shakeology shake!  How easy is it to scoop your shake powder into a shaker cup on your way out the door? Seconds….and you have a nutritionally dense meal in your hands.
3. Quality Ingredients – mostly non-GMO and organic ingredients! Also 2 vegan options for those who don’t want lactose, soy or dairy in their diets. NO artificial ingredients including NO artificial sweeteners (i.e. sucralose) as found in most other shakes on the market.
4. Digestion – has prebiotics, probiotics and digestive enzymes which aid in improving digestion, regularity, and nutrition absorption (GREAT for pregnancy digestion!)
5. Immune System – Adaptogens , antioxidants and phytonutrients (plant-sourced ingredients) help to promote strong immune systems. Since starting Shakeology 3.5 months ago, I haven’t been sick one single time!
6. Helps to reduce food cravings – I can personally vouch for this one – I used to be an ALL day and ALL night snacker. Since starting Shakeology, my snacking cravings have all virtually disappeared….seriously.  I’m therefore able to focus on adding quality meals to my diet vs. empty calories via snacks all day long – resulting in very healthy weight gain during this 3rd pregnancy.

I could go on and on about all the great things I LOVE about Shakeology but lets get to some cons as I’m sure some of you are thinking about some of those too:

CONS:
1. PRICE – yes, a month’s worth of Shakeology may lead to an initial sticker shock. At $130 for a 30-serving supply, it’s definitely not the “cheapest” thing on the market. HOWEVER, you get what you pay for, and, at roughly $4/shake (meal) this is so do-able! Compare this $4 dose of dense nutrition to a calorie filled Starbucks Frapp, or a fast food meal, or a bag of chips on the run….what will come out ahead in terms of health/nutrition value AND price? Sometimes those Starbucks drinks are $5+!?!  Yes there’s an initial investment involved, BUT if you’re committed to putting quality ingredients into you body, you will find a way! (and your body will thank you for it)  We are on a budget, but every month, we specifically set aside money to purchase enough enough Shakeology for us both. Our health and nutrition is something we will not sacrifice! We always make it work with our budget 🙂
2. The scary MLM appearance – Yes, Beachbody is, by definition, a MLM (multi-level-marketing) company. However, this company rely’s on primarily word-of-mouth marketing to get their products out there, recognized, and sampled. Who would want to sell something that they didn’t 150% believe in and live by? Beachbody encourages to “Be proof the product works.” In personally using Shakeology, I can vouch from 1st hand experience that it works – it works in boosting my immune system, energy level, reduce cravings, and make me feel all around GREAT and HEALTHY. Through my personal experience, I’m therefore more than willing to share my experience and thoughts on it through word-of-mouth.

Sometimes, as much as someone can “talk” about a product, it’s best to “watch” a short video about it. Heard of Tony Horton before? (founder of P90X, P90X2, P90X3, etc) – here’s his take on Shakeology 🙂
